The World Health Organization says almost 3 million people worldwide die every year because of obesity. This happens when a person’s weight is higher than what is healthy for his or her height. Obesity in the police force is causing some concern.

PNP Chief Police General Debold M Sinas wants overweight policemen to shed some fat to meet their ideal body weight requirements.

Even Interior Secretary Eduardo Año emphasized the need of law enforcers to be physically fit. Año said, “bilang isang pulis kailangang malakas at maganda ang kalusugan. Paano tayo makakahabol sa mga criminal kung hindi tayo physically fit.”

It all started when former PNP Chief Francisco Gamboa issued a memorandum circular prohibiting policemen from taking academic courses if they will not meet their ideal body mass index (BMI).

These academic courses such as Police Junior Leadership Course (PJLC), Public Safety Senior Leadership Course (PSSLC), Public Safety Officers Candidate Course (PSOCC), etc. are necessary for promotion.

PNP Chief Sinas admits he himself needs to lose weight since he’s obviously heavier than his ideal weight.

Now, Sinas led the 4-Minute Fitness Habit with the Voltes V theme as one of the initiated activity for BMI Improvement.

This activity is in compliance to the directive of the PNP National Headquarters which intended for Obese 3 to Overweight personnel to become more physically fit and active.

This is not the first time that the PNP has imposed a penalty on overweight policemen. When Senator Panfilo Lacson was a PNP Chief, policemen who failed to attempt a 34-inch waistline were meted strict penalties.
