Senator Pacquiao wants to raise retirement age to 60 years old for members of the AFP
Senator
Emmanuel “Manny” D. Pacquiao has filed a bill extending the compulsory
retirement age of members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) by four
years.
Senate Bill No. 1370seeks
to increase the compulsory retirement age for officers and enlisted men of the
Armed Forces of the Philippines from 56 years old to 60 years old.
“With
the technological advancements and medical innovations in the field of medicine,
the lives of individuals and soldiers on duty have been prolonged. This has
been shown in several countries such as in Australia, Belgium, and Germany,
where they have increased the compulsory retirement age of their military to
the age of sixty-seven (67).”
In
the Philippines, Presidential Decrees 1638 and 1650, which were signed in 1979,
almost four decades ago, set the retirement age of the military personnel of
the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to fifty-six (56) years of age.
