Senator Bato wants to increase the annual recruitment quota for women in the PNP
Entering
the Philippine National Police (PNP) as Police Officer is not an easy feat.
Applicants must hurdle several stages from the recruitment down to training
before they become a public servant.
During
the recruitment stage, all applicants were given their fair share to showcase
their skills, qualifications, and eligibility in the eyes of the Recruitment
Board.
However,
there is one part of the selection process that seems to be unfair especially
for the female applicant and that is the minimum ten percent (10%) allocated
quota for women in every recruitment.
According
to Section 58 of Republic Act No. 8551,
the PNP shall reserve ten percent (10%) of its annual
recruitment, training, and education quota for women.
Although
the PNP promotes equal opportunities for women and prohibits gender discrimination,
still the so-called 10% rule imbalance
gender equality – the right to enjoy equal state or condition.
Several
lawmakers re-filed the bill amending section 58 of RA 8551, however, those bills
are still pending before the Congress.
Former
Chief PNP and now Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa has filed Senate
Bill 1562 or An Act
Increasing the Recruitment Quota Recruitment of Female Philippine National
Police (PNP) Officers.
The said bill seeks to increase from Ten percent (10%) toFifteenpercent (15%)
the annual recruitment, training, and education for women and that the
recruitment quota for women will be increased to 20 percent (20%) thereafter.
Through this bill, women will be given equal (or greater)
opportunity to join the police force and that the number of female officers may
be pushed over time.
