Who is Police Senior Master Sergeant (PSMS) Awitin?
Police Senior Master Sergeant (PSMS) Aida Luceñara Awitin, an enforcer- educator is recognized as a 2018 Metrobank Outstanding Filipino awardee. PSMS Awitin is a teacher by profession but destined to serve as a police officer, helping the people in Davao Occidental for 12 years.

The
award granted to the excellent Filipino deserves such honor who is a
responsible fellow of ‘positive change’ and an influencer to the society. The
foundation conferred ten Filipino exemplars comprised of four teachers, three
soldiers, and three police deputies.
As
a daughter of the retired police officials, PSMS Awitin has a desire to serve
people and has been serving for almost 12 years. She believes that she can do
more than teaching and will continue her purpose of serving Filipinos in her
entire profession.
Due
to the mandate from the higher commands, PSMS Awitin is under the moving force
of the “Lingap Mamamayan Program,”
serving the community of Malita, Davao Occidental.
PSMS
Awitin organizes the Junior Police program in 2017, with the unity of the
government institutions. By this program the basic needs of the society like
food, hygiene kits, children’s school supplies, medicines, and dental services
provided by the government are distributed to the community.
In
connection, through the program, the society members are taught to be
knowledgeable enough to know their rights and duties. Enable them to
participate in reducing prohibited drug distributions and violence by
cooperating the police intelligence to gather information about the crime.
The
remote location of Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental, is one of the focused
communities on these plans. Aside from the mission in infiltrating the rebels
and crime incidents, the goal is to provide education, especially for
out-of-school youth, to the people in the community as well.
Police
officer Awitin said, “Being deployed from the terror-threatened
hinterlands of Malita, I realized that my role as a police officer is not just
to enforce laws, but to educate the people.”
Behind
the call of duty, she saves her salary to help the children in Little Baguio,
Malita, Davao Occidental. By providing school supplies from her own pocket for
the children, and spends time traveling to remote areas without fear.
She
aims to give back all she has to the children of Malita and plan to put up a
library Center in the place.
PSMS
Awitin awarded by the Metro Bank Foundation because of her hard work and
dedication to helping remote communities in Davao Occidental.
From
the interview, SPO1 Awitin said, “I have my own version of ‘Lingap pang
Mamamayan’ and I decided to add the Akyat Aral program in this service.”
She continued,
not all children in Little Baguio can attend school because most children’s
homes are far from the school.
She
also described the poor situation in remote areas where people don’t have
enough food. She stated that a hundred peso bill normally can sustain for a day
of food to the middle-class family, but for the needy people in Malita, the
said amount can support them throughout a week.
According
to PSMS Awitin, as a police community officer, she has a challenging task of
helping the people in the society and to uplift the positive image of the PNP
through interacting with the community people, despite the negativity.
As
one of the Metro Bank Outstanding Filipinos, PSMS Awitin received a monetary
prize. When questioned about how she will spend the prize, she wants to extend
the Junior Police Program and planned to spend the reward of developing the
DayCare center, half of it will be spent to construct a PNP community library
as well.
PSMS
Awitin has a passion for serving underprivileged communities. Beyond duty, she
shares her wage to pursue her goal in providing school supplies to the poor at
the same time preserving the good image of PNP that has recently criticized in
the midst of negativity.
